La leur faire aimer – telle est la tâche assignée dans les états totalitaires d’aujourd’hui aux ministères de la propagande, aux rédacteurs en chef de journaux, et aux maîtres d’école. ». Je viens de lire un article « Les cultures de la peur » sur la propagande et le contrôle des média sur le site web Le cerveau de l’université McGill de Montréal. Cet article montre comment dans nos sociétés occidentales la propagande est présente dans une apparence de libre expression pour le bien commun.
L’auteur nous invite en fait à s’attarder non pas aux désaccords entre les différents protagonistes des soit disant débat de société, mais aux présupposés qu’ils partagent et qui, eux, ne sont jamais remis en question ; ce que l’on appelle aussi la pensée unique.
Ces présupposés ont été analysés en détail par Noam Chomsky et Edward S. Herman dans leurs nombreuses études sur les médias au sein des sociétés industrielles avancées. Ils ont identifiés 5 « filtres » principaux dans les médias :
- La concentration des médias sous la tutelle de grandes entreprises ayant le profit comme priorité.
- La publicité en tant que source première de revenus de ces grands médias.
- La confiance aveugle aux sources d’information officielles comme les gouvernements, les compagnies.
- Les critiques que les puissants adressent aux médias et qui servent à les discipliner.
- L’hostilité des grands médias à l’endroit de toute perspective de gauche, socialiste, progressiste, etc.
Ces filtres se traduisent par « la fabrication d’un consentement » préétabli. Ils restreignent les métaphores employées, privilégiant celles qui mettent l’emphase sur la sécurité, la propriété ou la peur des conflits avec l’autorité et négligeant par exemple celles sur l’équité et la redistribution des ressources. Ils si bien intégrés dans l’inconscient des journalistes qu’ils en viennent à croire en toute honnêteté qu’ils sont objectifs.
La perpétuation des inégalités sociales et le maintien d’une culture de la peur est donc favorisée par l’institutionnalisation de ces filtres médiatiques. Toute ressemblance avec ce que l’on connait en France serait fortuite.
