  • The revolt against working from home has continued to gather pace after one of Britain’s biggest banking institutions told employees that bonuses would be lost if their office attendance didn’t improve.

Senior staff at Lloyds Banking Group have been informed that the firm may cut their bonuses should they fail to go into the office at least twice per week.

In the banking giant’s forthcoming round of bonuses, attendance requirements will be a factor for roughly 20 per cent of its 60,000 staff.

The decision by Lloyds comes just a number of weeks after the firm re-opened its City headquarters following an 18-month renovation period, with the Old Broad Street location now housing in excess of 5,000 staff.

The Covid pandemic ushered in a new era of hybrid working at some of the UK’s largest companies, but this move by Lloyds, was first reported by The Guardian, highlights a growing appetite amongst firms to return to the pre-pandemic status quo.

Initially the means by which the white-collar economy could continue to operate whilst strict lockdown measures were enforced, remote working has since become the norm and a means of attracting workers with the carrot of workplace flexibility.

However, concerns over employee productivity, coupled with the requirement to justify lofty rents for city office space, have seen a host of major employers reverse course and attempt to divert back towards an in-office work environment.

Lloyds are not the first bank to make a move against remote working, after Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs issued a 2023 edict which declared staff must work all five days of the week in the office.

Senior staff at Lloyd’s Banking Group have been informed that the firm may cut their bonuses should they fail to go into the office at least twice per week

In the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) most recent figures, it was shown that two in five UK workers enjoy at least some sort of remote working arrangement

Worries over a malaise in corporate culture and the lack of opportunity for new and younger staff members to hone their skills under the supervision of experienced colleagues are other reasons cited by leading firms for pursuing more in-office time.

Just last week, America’s biggest lender, JPMorgan Chase, told its staff that they will be required to attend their offices in person five days a week from March.

Similarly, Amazon returned to in-office work only from the start of the new year.

Two out of five employees work from home some of all of the time

The revolt against working from home is not just confined to the corporate world: last week the Metropolitan Police warned thousands of staff that their pay would be docked for every day staff refuse to come into the office when they are contracted to do so.

These positions included 999 call handlers, PCSOs and child protection officers.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures suggest two in five UK workers enjoy a remote working arrangement.

This figure rose to two-thirds for people in management positions.

There were large discrepancies in remote working numbers based on education level: almost 60 per cent of those with a degree work some or all the time from home, whereas less than 10 per cent of those without third level qualifications did so.

Reacting to the new enforcement of their hybrid working policy, a spokesperson for Lloyds stated the firm was ‘proud to offer an industry-leading approach to flexible working which delivers many benefits for our colleagues while ensuring that we are well-placed to deliver on our ambitious strategy to transform our business and continue to deliver for our customers’.

  • DISEQUILIBRIUM: Breathing life into the economy

Rain on the parade, yes that is a distinct possibility as Narendra Modi and his team try to come to grips with what they have inherited from the UPA.

The lost decade has meant that the economy lies in a shambles, clocking two successive years of sub five per cent GDP growth.

Ergo, most economic metrics are predictably in tatters. The backbone of Indian manufacturing and exports – micro, small and medium enterprises – is a wasteland, having being bled by repeated interest rate hikes.

With no policy side interventions possible at this late stage, a scramble of emergency response systems is the only way out

It’s a gross understatement to say that times are tough.

Prime Minister Modi in Panaji, on Saturday, gave us a peep into the future when he articulated that the time has come for tough decisions, bitter medicine and above all – financial prudence.

The Prime Minister has chosen to systematically approach the problem of reviving the economy.

He realises that economic alleviation will take time and he needs to get his teeth into the innards of the rapidly decelerating economy.

    Efficiency
As such, Modi has chosen to meet ministries in clusters in order to narrow focus on the issues and problems.

These meetings, which began late this week, have been structured in a well defined manner.

The Planning Commission has been kept out of this exercise it is more or less defunct given that Modi has not even bothered to appoint a new deputy chairman.

Instead, the new dispensation has adopted a spanking new plan.

First, finance, corporate affairs, disinvestment, banking, revenue, financial services and expenditure cluster visit the PMO, give a presentation and seek incentives based on their needs.

This exercise is expedited with finance secretary Arvind Mayaram and Planning Commission secretary Sindhushree Khullar, in attendance, taking notes.

This is the Plan Panel’s only connection with the budget making exercise in this regime.

Next up is agriculture, rural development and food processing, which comes in on June 16, with its bag of woes and policy measures.

They are then followed up by the transportation cluster – railways, roads and civil aviation.

The sequencing goes on with the industry cluster – heavy industries, chemicals, petrochemicals, pharma and fertilisers, followed by energy comprising petroleum, natural gas, coal, renewable energy and power.

These presentations are crucial to bring the PM up to speed with what is happening across the spectrum of government.

Top sources close to the developments privately say the situation is grim as the BJP/NDA has inherited an extremely floundering economy, as the profligate UPA has left the treasury in a state of ruin and disrepair.

The complexities of reversing the downturn, and more importantly, lifting sentiments, which are currently at bootstrap level, is of bigger concern for Modi.

    Governance
The overarching strategic imperative is to nurse the economy – which has been wheeled into an ICU – improve its vital signs and then bring it back on the rails.

The primacy of specificity is not lost, for there are areas that need urgent attention.

However it has to be said that at no time is Modi taking his eyes off the ball, which in this case includes fiscal prudence, consolidation and managing the errant current account deficit. Expanding domestic demand is the key here, given that as much as 67 per cent of our GDP is consumed locally.

There are some ways to do this, and one of them is to woo the middle class.

Crimped and cramped by tight fiscal control after the inordinately elongated fiscal profligacy of the UPA, Modi’s team is looking for ways and means to provide relief to the middle class.

Tax breaks is one option but combining social welfare schemes to create productive assets is really the more obvious route.

It is clear that populism is not the way forward for Modi, for that is the easy way out of this peculiar cul de sac.

Neither is shooting his way out of trouble by printing rupees given that the treasury is hardly brimming with riches.

As the cluster meetings wind down by the end of next week, the financial implications of incentives to revive the economy will be arrived at.

After a complete comprehension of the ills that afflict various verticals in the economic vector and its cost impacts are assessed, the plan allocations will be worked out.

Given that there is not much room to manoeuvre, this precarious tightrope walk will have to be done keeping all stakeholders and their aspirations in mind.

The role played by Mayaram and Khullar in this exercise is crucial, as the budget will be actualized depending on their assimilation of data and inputs.

However stern challenges remain, with the bigger threat percept coming from what is looming large on the radar – a price spike in food and oil prices and the disastrous prospect of a failing monsoon.

With no policy side interventions possible at this late stage, a scramble of emergency response systems is the only way out.

One thing though that is cast in stone is that we are not getting a populist budget.

That is de rigueur for Modi and good for the country.

The Christian woman whose decision to convert to Islam to marry her Muslim lover sparked riots in Cairo has spoken of her ordeal.

Twenty-five-year-old Abeer Fakhri was held against her will at a Cairo church after she decided to change her faith so should divorce her husband to be with her Muslim lover.

When rumours of her imprisonment spread they led to an explosion of sectarian violence in the city that left 15 people dead and a church in flames.

Mob: Firemen fight the fire at Imbaba’s Virgin Mary Church surrounded by a crowd of angry Muslims

Ms Fakhri had been seeking to escape an abusive marriage and marry her Muslim partner, Yassin Thabet.

With divorce strictly prohibited by the Coptic Christian Church, she found no other way to be with her lover but to convert to Islam, which does allow divorce.

Late last year, the couple eloped. But Ms Fakhri’s family located her and handed her over to church officials who imprisoned her in the Cairo district of Imbaba.

She said the church didn’t hurt her, ‘but only talked to me about why I am leaving my religion after the 25 years I remained a Christian.’

She was taken by the church to live in ‘a room with no windows.’

‘I couldn’t get out,’ she said. ‘They always lock the doors and I stay in.’

Ms Fakhri told how she pleaded with Mr Thabet over the phone for help, and gave him her location. He responded by rallying Islamic hard-liners, who led attacks on the district’s churches.

Inferno: Clashes between Christians and Muslims left 15 people dead and more than 200 injured

Bearded fundamentalists, known as Salafis, and thugs wielding swords stormed Imbaba’s Virgin Mary Church, destroying pews, smashing windows and tearing down religious icons.

One fact-finding mission said that the attackers slaughtered the church’s Christian guard and burned his body before setting fire to the building.

A short distance away, the mob tried to storm the Mar Mina Church, where they clashed for hours with local Christians who formed a human shield around the building.

Instead, the attackers set fire to two six-floor buildings and damaged several shops while exchanging gunfire and firebombs with Christians.

Dozens of armored vehicles and hundreds of soldiers flooded the district, but the fighting raged for hours.

Fifteen people were killed and more than 200 were injured.

Fighting: Egyptians gather next to a building belonging to Christians that was set on fire during clashes between Muslims and Christians in the Imbaba neighborhood of Cairo

In her home village, Ms Fakhri’s cousin, Eid Hanna, said that she had been married since 2008 and that her Christian husband repeatedly beat her up.

‘She rarely stayed at her husband’s place and most of the time she was at her parents’ house,’ he said.

Mr Hanna, a 41-year-old baker, said that a priest tried to mend relations between the two but it didn’t work.

Ms Fakhri and Mr Thabet decided to flee from their home village deep in southern Egypt to a northern Nile Delta city.

In similar cases, women have been killed by their own families for having an affair with a man from another religion.

Conservative Egyptian families – both Christian and Muslim – perceive conversion as a social stigma. It is also religiously prohibited.

After leaving her Christian husband, Ms Fakhri and Mr Thabet wed in an informal ceremony recognized by Islam but not by Christianity. She was detained in the past week for questioning over allegations of polygamy.

Set alight: Christians look at a church which was set on fire during clashes between Muslims and Christians in the heavily populated area of Imbaba in Cairo last night

Father Abanoub Tharwat, deputy bishop in the southern city of Assuit, said he deals with dozens of cases of women converting to Islam.

Most of the cases are driven by ‘women fed up with their husbands and who want divorces or women who had extramarital relations and want to cover it up,’ he said.

He said the church does not go after the women to force them to return to Christianity, but added that the church interferes when the motive for conversion is not purely religious.

Islamic extremists view church intervention as ‘abductions’ of Muslims and they accuse the church of torturing them and keeping them in underground cells.

Tensions: Egyptians gather next to a building belonging to Christians that was set on fire during clashes

In the aftermath of the revolution that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak, the Christian minority has been demanding a better position in society.

At the same time, Muslim hard-liners who have risen to prominence are using anti-Christian rhetoric to boost their campaign to bring about an Islamic state in Egypt.

‘We feel that there is a big plan plotted by the Islamic extremists to take the country backwards,’ Father Tharwat said. ‘If things remain as they are, Christians here are ready for martyrdom.’

Some observers say that behind the attack on Imbaba’s Christians are groups that seek to undermine the revolution: a combination of Mubarak loyalists, members of his disbanded National Democratic party and hard-line clerics with ties to the former state security apparatus.

Military officials, quoted in daily papers, shared that view, blaming ruling party remnants, but without naming anyone.

Under Mubarak, authorities had tried to brush sectarian violence under the rug, forcing feuding Muslim and Christian clans into grudging agreements while failing to address the root causes of the violence or arrest perpetrators.

The scale of the violence in Imbaba has forced the country’s military rulers to act. More than 200 people – Muslims and Christians – were arrested and sent for trial before military tribunals.

Burnt-out: Christians look at the church which was set on fire

Cost: A Coptic Christian priest inspects the damage at the church which was set on fire in the night during clashes in the Imbaba

At least two public fact-finding missions have been launched to pin down details of how the violence happened.

And the military and transitional civilian government moved to address some of the policies that Christians say relegate them to second-class status in Egypt.

Among them are restrictions on where Christians can build churches, in place even though they make up an estimated 10 percent of Egypt’s population of 80 million. Most of them are Copts.

On Wednesday, the government formed a National Justice Committee that has 30 days to draw up a law for the building of places of worship with the same rules for Muslims and Christians.

Martyrs: Egyptian Christians carry the coffin of one of the victims of the clashes with Muslims in the streets of Imbaba, western Cairo, during a funeral ceremony at Giza church

Sectarian: Egyptian Coptic Christians carry a coffin containing one of the victims killed in clashes between Muslims and Christians, during the funeral mass in Cairo

The committee will also look into reopening nearly 50 churches shut down under Mubarak’s rule for reasons seen by Christians as discriminatory.

The government also promised a law banning sectarian incitement and protests in front of mosques or churches and the committee will look into handling all issues relating to conversions.

Christian activist-lawyer Amir Ramzy called the moves ‘a happy surprise’ for Christians.

‘These demands have been there forever and no government felt the urge to meet them. In 30 days, we will have what we have been asking for for 30 years,’ he said.

‘These were the seeds of sectarian tensions and this is the right way to uproot them.’

  • As Hollywood welcomes the return of movie premieres and award shows, we can’t help but wonder what the role of the red carpet will be post pandemic.

Many experts predict it will be much like that of the roaring 20s when Americans started to loosen up after enduring the devastation of WWI, a fatal pandemic and economic depression.

While we haven’t seen the flapper look just yet, we are seeing the glitz and the glamour of the Jazz Age. FEMAIL rounds up red carpet trends worth noting and embracing in your personal style.

Endeavour returns to Kennedy Space Center after completing Nasa’s share of construction at the ISS

Atlantis wheeled to the launch pad in front of thousands of onlookers ahead of final shuttle mission

Space shuttle Endeavour and its six astronauts returned to Earth in the early hours of this morning, bringing to an end the penultimate mission in Nasa’s 30-year programme.

Endeavour touched down on the runway a final time under the cover of darkness, just as Atlantis, the last shuttle bound for space, arrived at the launch pad for the grand finale in five weeks.

Commander Mark Kelly – whose wife, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, remained at her rehab centre in Houston – brought Endeavour to a stop before hundreds of onlookers that included the four Atlantis astronauts who will take flight in July.

Mission control told the astonauts: ‘122million miles flown during 25 challenging space-flights. Your landing ends a vibrant legacy for this amazing vehicle that will long be remembered. Welcome home, Endeavour.’

Commander Kelly replied: ‘It’s sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy.’

He thanked all those who worked on Endeavour over the years.

The final Endeavour crew completed the U.S. share of construction during their 16-day trip to the International Space Station.

A considerably bigger crowd had gathered a few hours earlier to see Atlantis make its way to the launch pad, the last such trek ever by a shuttle.

Thousands of Kennedy Space Centre workers and their families lined the route last night as Atlantis crept out of the mammoth Vehicle Assembly Building a little after sunset, bathed in xenon lights.

Atlantis Commander Christopher Ferguson said, waving towards his ship: ‘We’re going to look upon this final mission as a celebration of all that the space shuttle has accomplished over its 30-year life span.’

Bright lights also illuminated the landing strip for Kelly and his crew, who made the 25th night landing out of a total of 134 shuttle flights.

The Endeavour astronauts – all experienced spacemen – departed the 220mile-high outpost over the weekend, after adding the finishing touches.

They installed a $2billion cosmic ray detector, an extension beam and a platform full of spare parts, enough to keep the station operating in the shuttle-less decade ahead.

Their flight lasted 16 days and completed Nasa’s role in the space station construction effort that began 12 years ago.

Thousands of Kennedy Space Centre workers and their families lined the route as Atlantis made its way towards the launch pad

The official tally for Nasa’s youngest shuttle after 25 flights, nearly half of them to the space station, is 122.8million miles, 170 crew members, 299 days in space and 4,672 orbits of Earth.

Kelly’s wife was shot in the head during a mass shooting in January, but made a remarkable recovery and was able to watch the launch on May 16.

She did not travel to Florida for the landing because of the inconvenient hour, her husband said. They will reunite in Houston on Thursday.

  • Joe Cole believes defeat for Manchester City against Liverpool on Sunday will rule Pep Guardiola’s men out of the title race.

City have won six of the last seven Premier League titles to become the dominant force in English football, but are currently experiencing their worst-ever run of results under Guardiola having failed to win any of their last six games.

After losing five straight matches City threw away a three-goal lead on Tuesday to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord to continue their dismal run of form.

A loss at Anfield this weekend would leave the defending champions 11 points adrift of Arne Slot’s high-flying Reds, and Cole is convinced this would be too much of a deficit to claw back.

‘If they lose this weekend I think they are out of the title race,’ Cole told Mail Sport following the launch of his Football’s Greatest: Could It Be Magic podcast with ex-Chelsea team-mate Ashley Cole. ‘I just think 11 points will be too much to pull back even for this great side.

‘It’s what makes this game fascinating at the weekend. Liverpool are coming off the back of a great win so it’s going to be a great game.’

Manchester City have failed to win any of their last six matches across all competitions

The side are set to face Arne Slot’s high-flying Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon

Joe Cole believes champions City will be out the title race if they lose to the Reds this weekend

City looked imperious in the opening weeks of the season but have fallen away alarmingly over the past month, and Guardiola looked visibly distressed following his side’s midweek collapse against Feyenoord.

Cole admits it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why things have gone so wrong, but has backed Guardiola to eventually find the answers to get City back on top.

He added: ‘It’s incredible to look at. This team that’s been impenetrable and invincible for so many years and achieved so much and won so many trophies going through a difficult spell.

‘I’m looking at the players at the back and they’re all top, top players but the obvious thing to look at is Rodri coming out the side. He’s obviously a big influence but I think that’s been overstated. But I think they’ve missed a bit of physicality in midfield.

‘It’s very hard when you lose that air of invincibility as a team, your mentality, you can be 3-0 up at home and nothing seems safe. It’s a challenge. I’m excited to see what Pep does to get out of this.

‘I think he’s revolutionised the way we play football at our core and in our culture, and I think history tells us he finds a solution to all problems and I think he’ll figure this out.

‘I think that’s the motivation with him signing his new contract. When you’re a competitor like he is you want to prove yourself and I think he wants to show that he can navigate this club out of this predicament.’

Cole feels City are on the brink of dropping out of the title race, but he still expects Liverpool to be challenged as they go in search of a record-equalling 20th top-flight crown.

The 43-year-old has named his former club Chelsea as potential title contenders after starting the season strongly with Enzo Maresca at the helm.

Very few expected Chelsea to be in the title picture at the start of the season after they finished 12th and 6th respectively in their first two campaigns of the Todd Boehly era.

But the Blues have surprised many and currently sit in third spot, a point behind City and nine adrift of Liverpool.

Cole has tipped Chelsea to push Liverpool all the way if they can start to close the gap at the top between now and the end of the year.

‘I think if they can be at the turn of the year after the Christmas period, if they’re within six points I think they can mount a title challenge,’ Cole said.

Pep Guardiola has looked visibly distressed on the touchline, but Cole has backed the Spanish manager to eventually turn things around at City

Cole feels City are close to falling out of the title race, but is convinced his former club Chelsea are capable of challenging for major honours under Enzo Maresca

Why Pep Guardiola scratches his head until it bleeds and what it means for his 5 stages of grief

‘Because knowing the owners, I think they’ll go in and have a go again (in the January transfer window). But that is really remarkable that I’m saying that because there were times last year when you were searching for answers and we didn’t know where they’d end up.’

Juggling domestic and European duties has often been a problem for clubs over the years, but Cole has claimed it has actually worked in Chelsea’s favour this season as it has allowed Maresca to build a squad that is capable of challenging on all fronts.

‘The best thing in Chelsea’s favour is playing in the Europa Conference League,’ he continued.

‘There is such a disparity in the level that they’re able to keep all their players fit and ready, so if they suffer injuries like they have already a little bit, players are coming in and they’re ready to hit the ground running. You wouldn’t be able to do that if they were in the Champions League and maybe even the Europa League and still compete.

‘There’s a lot of positives and it’s allowing players like (Mykailo) Mudryk, (Kiernan) Dewsbury-Hall, (Benoit) Badiashile to all get game time, all develop, all learn, because they need games. Everyone is improving, the manager, the players, everything is calmer. There’s an opportunity to get back to the top.’
